Plan your trip
The best time to visit Chikmagalur depends on what you want
Chikmagalur is worth visiting in every season, but each one feels different. Here is a simple guide, written from the hills around Mallandur. Weather changes from year to year, so call us before you book.
October to February: cool days and clear views
This is the most popular season. Days are pleasant, skies are clearer, and it is a good time for treks such as Mullayanagiri and Kavikal Gudda, for Hebbe Falls and for Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary. Nights on the hills are cool, so bonfire evenings and stargazing are at their best. Weekends and holidays are busiest, so book early.
June to September: monsoon and green hills
The hills are at their greenest, the waterfalls are full and mist hangs over the plantation. It is quiet and good for a slow, restful stay. Expect rain, slippery trails and possible interruptions to the Wi-Fi and the road. Carry rain gear and plan outdoor days around the weather.
March to May: warmer days and coffee blossom
Days get warmer, but the hills stay cooler than the plains. Coffee plants can blossom after the first showers, which fills the estates with fragrance. Early mornings and evenings are the best time for walks.
Which season is right for you?
Families and couples: October to February for comfortable weather. Trekkers and groups: October to February for clearer trails. Quiet and budget-minded travellers: the monsoon, when it is calmer and bookings are fewer.
Whatever the month, Suraksha Homestay is a simple, non-renovated coffee estate home with no neighbours, wildlife at the pond at night and dark, clear skies. See experiences, places around and how to reach us.
